The National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) has dispatched 2 million male condoms to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital as the lakeside town prepares to host the 2025 Devolution Conference. The move is part of an intensified public health strategy aimed at preventing HIV transmission during the week-long, high-profile gathering.

The conference, which draws thousands of delegates from across Kenya and beyond, is expected to significantly increase human traffic in the county. Health experts warn that such large events can lead to a spike in risky sexual behavior, heightening the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Homa Bay County, which already bears one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the country, has been identified as a priority area for targeted prevention measures.

Speaking during the handover of the consignment on Monday, NASCOP Director Dr. Rose Wafula emphasized the importance of proactive intervention. “We know that prevention is better than cure. By making condoms readily available, we are giving people the tools to protect themselves and their partners. This is not about encouraging immorality, but about safeguarding public health,” she said.

County health officials have confirmed that the condoms will be distributed not only at the referral hospital but also through community health volunteers, hotels, and public venues near the conference grounds. Public awareness campaigns and HIV testing services will run concurrently to reinforce the prevention message.

Local leaders have welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns with national efforts to reduce new HIV infections. “We appreciate NASCOP’s timely support. Our aim is to host a successful conference without compromising the health of our residents and visitors,” said Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.

The Devolution Conference officially kicks off tomorrow, with over 5,000 delegates expected to attend.
