Nairobi’s Central Business District descended into chaos on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. News of his passing in India sparked an immediate and emotional reaction across the country, with hundreds of supporters flooding the streets in mourning.

According to reports shared by Citizen TV Kenya, the situation in the CBD quickly turned violent as crowds gathered to express their grief. Several shops were broken into, and looting was reported in parts of the city center. Public transport was briefly disrupted as police moved in to disperse the crowds and restore order.

Raila Odinga, a key figure in Kenya’s political history, died earlier that morning in Kochi, India. He was undergoing treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital when he collapsed during a morning walk. Doctors at Devamatha Hospital confirmed that he suffered a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead shortly after being admitted.

At the time of his death, Raila was in India with his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, who was receiving Ayurvedic treatment at Sreedhareeyam Hospital. The facility had previously helped her regain partial eyesight after years of visual challenges. Reports indicate that Indian authorities have begun formal procedures to repatriate the body to Kenya.
