Naomi Jepchirchir, a young Grade Two student from Nandi County, has become an internet sensation after a heartwarming photo of her admiring university graduates went viral.
The incident occurred at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, during a graduation ceremony that President William Ruto also attended.
Naomi’s mother, Milkah Chepchumba, explained that they attended the graduation event purely as spectators since they had no family member graduating.
Milkah wanted her children to experience one of the biggest events in their village. Despite not having a graduate in the family, Naomi was excited about the occasion and particularly eager to see President Ruto.
According to Milkah, Naomi was very curious and repeatedly asked if she could see the graduates and the president.
Although Milkah initially tried to keep Naomi by her side, the little girl’s enthusiasm led her to sneak away to the graduation pavilion.
Milkah, who was distracted by another woman asking for space due to her breastfeeding child, did not notice Naomi’s departure immediately. It was only after a while that she realized her daughter was missing.
Fortunately, Naomi was soon brought back by someone who found her at the front of the pavilion. Milkah was unaware at that time that Naomi’s image had been captured and was quickly spreading across social media. It wasn’t until she visited a hospital later that she learned from a doctor about her daughter’s newfound fame. The doctor advised her to keep her phone on as many people were trying to reach her, offering support and help for Naomi.
The touching story of Naomi has captured the hearts of many Kenyans. Several well-wishers have already stepped forward to offer assistance. Journalist Lemiso Sato, who shared Naomi’s story online, confirmed that her school uniform and other needs have been taken care of.
Additionally, Hon. Julius Keter, the Majority Chief Whip at the Nandi County Assembly, has also shown interest in helping the young girl.
Naomi’s mother revealed that her daughter dreams of wearing a graduation gown one day.
