DCP Gachagua

Gatundu North Member of Parliament has publicly criticised former Deputy President over his continued call for highly educated and legally trained leaders within the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). In a social media post that quickly attracted attention online, Kururia appeared to mock a DCP aspirant participating in the Ol Kalou nominations while questioning whether the candidate matched the standards Gachagua had previously advocated for.

In the Facebook post, Kururia wrote, “Huyu ni LAWYER????? Huyu United Democratic Alliance UDA itamnyoa mpaka makwapa,” accompanied by laughing emojis. The statement, loosely implying that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) would overwhelmingly defeat the DCP candidate, was interpreted as both a political attack and an attempt to undermine Gachagua’s message on leadership quality.

The criticism stems from Gachagua’s earlier remarks encouraging Mt Kenya voters to support intelligent and legally trained politicians capable of effectively defending the region’s interests in Parliament. In November 2025, Gachagua praised several opposition figures, including , , and , describing them as loyal and highly skilled lawyers who had consistently defended their political leadership over the years.

He further argued that DCP needed at least 40 lawyers among its projected 140 Members of Parliament to ensure the Mt Kenya region had strong voices capable of articulating its political and economic interests effectively. His remarks were widely viewed as criticism of some current legislators allied to UDA.

Kururia’s latest comments highlight the growing rivalry between UDA and Gachagua’s DCP as both parties intensify efforts to dominate the Mt Kenya political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election. The Gatundu North legislator has remained a vocal supporter of President and has consistently defended the government against criticism from Gachagua and his allies.

Political analysts believe the exchange reflects the increasingly personal and heated nature of political competition within the region, particularly as campaigns for the Ol Kalou by-election and the 2027 elections gather momentum.
