Babu Owino has cautioned that a divided opposition could unintentionally secure an easy re-election path for William Ruto in the 2027 General Election if leaders fail to unite behind a single presidential candidate.

Speaking during an interview on a podcast hosted by Herman Manyora, which aired on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the Nairobi Member of Parliament and gubernatorial aspirant emphasized that unity is not optional but essential for mounting a serious challenge against the current administration.

He urged opposition leaders to set aside personal ambitions and avoid ego-driven politics, stressing that the upcoming election will require cooperation, discipline, and a shared strategy. According to Owino, allowing multiple candidates to contest separately would split the vote and significantly weaken the opposition’s chances of success.

“The opposition needs to present a united front. If Ruto is to be replaced, unity is the key—it would guarantee their victory,” he stated, calling on leaders to rally behind a single, strong candidate.

Owino further warned that internal rivalries and self-serving interests could undermine what he described as a crucial opportunity for leadership change. He maintained that without coordination and mutual trust, even a strong opposition base may fail to translate into electoral victory.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions among opposition figures, many of whom have signaled openness to supporting a consensus candidate at the appropriate time. Several coalition members have already indicated their willingness to sacrifice individual ambitions for the sake of unity.

Additionally, members of the Linda Mwananchi movement, including Owino, have expressed readiness to collaborate with other opposition groups. Leaders such as Godfrey Osotsi and James Orengo have also hinted at the possibility of forming a broader coalition to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections.
