Meru driver

A driver in Meru County is being hailed as a hero for his quick thinking after a lorry loaded with hay caught fire after coming into contact with electricity cables.

The driver, identified as Mathew Kaugiria, was driving the vehicle when the incident occurred, with the hay cargo accidentally touching overhead power lines.

According to reports, the lorry burst into flames while in a populated area, raising fears that many people could be injured if the fire spread.

In a courageous decision, Kaugiria chose to drive the burning vehicle away from the crowd and into nearby bushes.

Speaking after the incident, Kaugiria said, “I saw that many people would get hurt if that vehicle caught fire, so it was better for me to head into the bushes.”

His selfless action is said to have prevented what could have been a major tragedy, as members of the public later joined efforts to extinguish the fire.

Kaugiria sustained minor injuries to his hand and face during the incident.

Residents who witnessed the incident have praised him for putting the safety of others ahead of his own, describing him as a true hero.

The incident has also raised concerns about the dangers of transporting tall loads near electricity lines, with calls for drivers and transporters to exercise extra caution.

Kaugiria is currently recovering from his injuries, with many Kenyans wishing him a speedy recovery.
