Mambo Mbotela, a name etched in Kenyan history, is renowned for revolutionizing radio broadcasting. His iconic raspy voice and profound knowledge of Kenyan history have endeared him to many listeners, even long after his retirement. Despite his public prominence, little is known about his private life, particularly his relationship with his wife, Alice.
Mambo met Alice in 1970 when she, a devoted fan of his radio programs, decided to visit Broadcasting House to meet the voice she admired. He recalled in a 2018 interview that Alice’s beauty captivated him instantly.
“She was a fan of my programs and came to see me in person. She was so cute, and I immediately fell in love with her,” he shared. After giving her a tour of the radio station, they had tea together, and Alice even sat through one of his live shows. Mambo admitted that he put in extra effort that day to impress her.
Their relationship has endured over the years, and Mambo attributes its success to their strong spiritual foundation and Alice’s good character. He emphasized the importance of cultivating strong individual character in a relationship, stating, “Good character is what sustains a marriage.”
Together, they have raised three children: a daughter named Aida, and two sons, Jimmy and George. Although they have shared many years of marriage, Mambo and Alice do not live together. Mambo resides in Langata, where he keeps busy by running a shop and occasionally playing at a local club.
Meanwhile, Alice prefers the tranquility of their rural home, which she enjoys for its peaceful environment. Despite living apart, Mambo speaks fondly of his wife, indicating that their relationship remains strong and loving.
