Assistant Inspector General Gisiri Nyamohanga today stands out as one of the most influential women in Kenya’s security sector.

In March 2025 she was appointed as the Nyanza Regional Police Commander, taking over from Patrick Tito who was transferred to Nairobi to serve as the Principal Assistant to the Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.

Her appointment was not just a normal transfer but a historic move, as she became the only female regional police boss in the country, breaking barriers in a field largely dominated by men.

Nyamohanga has served the Administration Police Service for more than two decades, rising through the ranks with resilience and hard work.

Before taking up her current role, she was the Commandant of the Senior Police Staff College in Emali, where she was tasked with training and preparing senior officers from both the Kenya Police Service and the APS.

Her elevation to the Nyanza command was also seen as a timely intervention, especially after critics faulted recent reshuffles in the National Police Service for lacking gender balance.

By virtue of her rank as Assistant Inspector General, she remains the senior-most female officer within APS, and her presence at the helm of Nyanza has been hailed as a progressive step for women in uniform.

Since taking over in Nyanza, Nyamohanga has shown leadership that balances firmness with empathy.

In June 2025, she led a delegation of top officers to visit the family of slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang in Homa Bay.

The visit, which included a donation to the bereaved family, was symbolic as it marked the first time senior police officers officially joined locals in mourning.

She has also been visible during times of tension, particularly when Gen Z planned a memorial demonstration in the region.

While assuring protesters of police protection, she urged them to remain peaceful and respect the rights of others, saying security would be guaranteed but development gains should not be destroyed through violence.
