Kenyan content creator Lofty Matambo has sparked conversations online after praising the beauty and confidence of inmates during a recent beauty pageant held at Lang’ata Women’s Prison.

The event, which was attended by prison officials, guests, and supporters, aimed at encouraging self-confidence, talent, and personal growth among inmates. Photos and videos shared on social media showed inmates walking confidently on stage while dressed in colourful outfits during the pageant competition.

In a post shared on his Facebook page, Lofty Matambo praised the women for their beauty and confidence, saying many people outside prison would be surprised by the level of talent and elegance displayed during the event. His comments quickly attracted attention online, with many Kenyans reacting to the viral photos and videos.

Some social media users supported his remarks, saying the inmates deserve encouragement and opportunities for rehabilitation despite their situations. Others praised the prison for organising activities that help boost the inmates’ self-esteem and mental well-being.

However, some netizens expressed mixed feelings about the pageant, with a section of online users debating whether beauty contests should be held in correctional facilities.

The Lang’ata Women’s Prison has in recent years gained attention for programmes focused on rehabilitation, skills development, counselling, and talent nurturing for inmates. Officials have often said such activities are meant to help prisoners rebuild confidence and prepare for life after serving their sentences.

The beauty pageant reportedly included music, dancing, modelling, and entertainment performances from the inmates. Videos shared online showed the audience cheering loudly as contestants confidently showcased their talents on stage.

Lofty Matambo’s remarks have continued to trend online, especially after clips from the event circulated widely on Facebook, TikTok, and X. Many people praised the inmates for remaining hopeful and positive despite the challenges they face.

The event has once again highlighted ongoing discussions in Kenya about prison reforms, rehabilitation programmes, and the importance of giving inmates a second chance in society.
