Citizen TV Editorial Director Linus Kaikai has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding President William Ruto’s unapologetic defense of body-shaming opposition figures, calling the episode a worrying sign of declining decorum in the highest office of the land.

In recent public remarks during a development tour in Western Kenya, President Ruto doubled down on personal attacks, including mocking opponents’ physical appearance such as accusing one of “overeating” and having a “fat head” while insisting he has “no regrets” and is “not apologetic.” He justified the approach by claiming the opposition initiated “personality politics,” forcing him to respond in kind.

The comments sparked widespread backlash, with critics describing them as “unpresidential,” “shameful,” and unbecoming of the presidency.

Figures like lawyer Dan Maanzo argued the outbursts have cost Ruto support ahead of future elections, while opposition voices and civil society groups said they demean the dignity of the office and distract from pressing national issues like the economy and debt.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s flagship evening show titled NewsGang and in follow-up commentary, Linus Kaikai described the president’s language as “a step too far” and reflective of broader challenges facing Kenyan leadership.

“The presidency is not just a position of power—it is the embodiment of national unity, restraint, and statesmanship,” Kaikai stated.

“When the holder of that office resorts to body-shaming and personal insults in public forums meant for development matters, it lowers the bar for political discourse and sets a poor example for the youth who look to leaders for guidance.”

Kaikai, known for his tough but measured questioning of Ruto during past high-profile interviews (including the widely discussed 2024 State House session on police brutality), emphasized that robust debate is essential in democracy but must remain policy-focused.
