City lawyer Donald Kipkorir has sparked debate after weighing in on the online drama involving Mike Sonko’s son-in-law, Eden, who has been trending since Sunday, November 6. This followed a confrontation where the former Nairobi governor stormed his daughter’s home in Kitengela after reports that Eden had assaulted her.

According to Sonko, his daughter Salma Mbuvi called her mother in distress, claiming she had been slapped twice for simply asking for breakfast. Primrose Mbuvi immediately alerted Sonko, who rushed to the couple’s home and publicly reprimanded Eden for allegedly abusing Salma.

The matter drew even more attention when Sonko revealed that he had been footing most of the young couple’s expenses. He claimed he pays their rent, caters for school fees for their children, provides shopping, and had even gifted Eden a car. These revelations sparked public conversations around financial dependence and dignity in marriage.

Reacting to the saga, lawyer Donald Kipkorir offered his own blunt take. In his commentary, he compared any man who depends heavily on his wife’s family to a “manny” — a male version of a nanny. Kipkorir stated that when a father-in-law provides a house, pays bills, and handles daily expenses, the beneficiary loses the authority traditionally associated with being a husband.

He humorously remarked that such a man should not even think of raising his voice, let alone lifting his hand against his wife, because he is not financially independent enough to claim that role.

Kipkorir’s comments have stirred mixed reactions online, with many agreeing that financial responsibility shapes respect in relationships, while others argue that support from in-laws should not define one’s masculinity.

The incident continues to attract public interest as Kenyans debate abuse, family dynamics, and the expectations placed on men in modern marriages.
