Dennis Kiprotich, a 28-year-old matatu tout operating on the Nakuru–Njoro–Mau Narok route, died under troubling circumstances after being arrested and held in police custody.

His arrest followed a confrontation with a passenger who reportedly refused to make space for another commuter in a matatu, triggering an altercation that attracted the attention of plainclothes officers.

Kiprotich was apprehended at the Nakuru matatu terminus on March 21 and taken to the Nakuru Central Police Station. Sources indicate that efforts were made to have him released in exchange for a KSh 3,000 bribe.

However, those negotiations allegedly fell through, and he was taken to court on March 24, where he faced assault charges and was granted bond of KSh 10,000 — an amount he couldn’t raise.

Unable to secure his release, Kiprotich was transferred to Nakuru GK Prison. But upon arrival, he reportedly appeared unwell and was in visible distress, complaining of headaches and general pain. His condition deteriorated quickly, prompting authorities to rush him to the hospital.

A postmortem conducted by an Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) revealed multiple injuries, including serious trauma to the back, limbs, and a severe head injury that resulted in internal bleeding.

The presence of a blood clot on his back suggested that the bleeding may have been fatal. David Kuria of IMLU strongly hinted at possible torture while Kiprotich was in police custody.

The incident has raised public concern and renewed calls for accountability and justice in cases of police brutality.

Authorities are now under pressure to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kiprotich’s death and take action against any wrongdoing.
