Residents of Kanyangi village in Kitui County were left in disbelief on Wednesday after a local pastor died in a bizarre incident during a prayer session. The clergyman, identified as Pastor Stephen Musyoka, was attacked by a swarm of bees while conducting prayers meant to cast out demons from a family home.

According to eyewitnesses, the pastor had been called by a family claiming to be troubled by evil spirits. Neighbours said he arrived at the homestead in the afternoon, accompanied by a group of church members, ready to perform deliverance prayers. Midway through the session, a huge swarm of bees suddenly descended on the crowd.

“The pastor was the main target. The bees covered his face and body as people screamed and ran for safety,” said one resident who watched from a distance. Attempts to help him proved difficult as the bees grew more aggressive.

By the time locals managed to chase the insects away using smoke and fire, Pastor Musyoka had collapsed. He was rushed to a nearby health centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Area Chief John Muthama confirmed the incident, saying police have already launched investigations to establish the cause of the strange bee attack. He added that authorities are not ruling out foul play, though initial reports suggest it was a natural invasion.

The chief further cautioned residents against engaging in mass gatherings in areas prone to wild bee colonies, especially during the hot season when the insects are more aggressive.

The pastor, well known in the area for his healing and deliverance ministry, had served in the community for more than a decade. His sudden death has sparked mixed reactions, with some locals calling it a tragic accident while others view it as a spiritual battle gone wrong.

Police have taken samples from the scene and promised to release a detailed report after investigations. Meanwhile, the family and church members are planning burial arrangements for the pastor, whose death has shocked Kitui County.
