Police in Kisumu have launched investigations after suspected thieves were captured on CCTV breaking into a government vehicle and stealing a camera valued at KSh 400,000.

The incident happened early on April 29, 2026, outside Kingdom Guest House in Kisumu town.The vehicle involved was an Isuzu D-Max assigned to Principal Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development Dr Jane Kere Imbunya.

She was not present when the theft occurred.

According to police reports, the driver and a security officer attached to the principal secretary discovered the break-in at about 7:43 a.m. after waking up and noticing that one of the rear side windows had been smashed.

A search of the vehicle revealed that a high-value camera, which had been left on the back seat, was missing.Officials estimated the stolen equipment to be worth KSh 400,000.

Police officers who visited the scene confirmed signs of forced entry.

Investigators reviewing CCTV footage established that several young men approached the parked vehicle before smashing the window and taking the camera.

No arrests had been made by the time of reporting, but detectives said they were following strong leads from the surveillance footage and other evidence collected at the scene.

Authorities noted that similar thefts from parked vehicles have become common in recent months, especially in busy parking areas.

Investigations show that criminals often monitor recently parked cars and break in while guessing that valuables may have been left inside.

Police added that several suspects linked to similar incidents have previously been arrested and charged in court, as efforts continue to curb the growing trend.

The latest case has renewed warnings to motorists against leaving expensive items inside unattended vehicles, even for short periods.
