Former Meru governor Peter Munya has intensified pressure on leaders backing President William Ruto, warning that voters in the county are preparing to punish them in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Meru town during the announcement of the postponement of the opposition’s planned regional tour, Munya claimed public frustration with the Kenya Kwanza administration is spreading rapidly across the county.
According to him, residents in both urban centres and remote villages are openly chanting “wantam,” a slogan calling for Ruto to serve only one term in office.
The Party of National Unity leader argued that leaders allied to the government have lost touch with ordinary citizens and are ignoring pressing concerns affecting local communities.
He pointed to the insecurity situation in parts of Meru, saying many families continue to suffer from bandit attacks while elected leaders remain focused on political mobilisation instead of solutions.
Munya criticised politicians who continue promising development projects despite unresolved security challenges. He maintained that residents are more concerned about safety and economic hardships than political rhetoric.
According to the former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, leaders who fail to address insecurity and the rising cost of living risk being rejected at the ballot.
The opposition tour that had been scheduled to begin on May 20 was pushed to June 4 to June 8, with Munya saying preparations are ongoing for a wider engagement with residents across the county.
He also faulted government officials for repeatedly blaming former President Uhuru Kenyatta for current economic difficulties, including higher fuel prices and increased taxes.
Munya accused some Cabinet Secretaries of avoiding responsibility instead of addressing the concerns facing Kenyans.
The former governor, who is seeking a political comeback in Meru, recently hinted that the Ameru community could support Fred Matiang’i in the 2027 presidential race as opposition realignments continue to take shape.
