Videos of former Nation Media Group journalist Nasibo Kabale living on the streets have caused widespread concern among Kenyans. The widely shared footage has prompted many to question how the once-prominent news reporter ended up in such circumstances. Kabale, known for her in-depth reporting on health issues, gained national attention in 2020 for her comprehensive coverage of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Raggedly dressed, barefoot with unkempt hair, the video depicts Nasibo holding a knife as she narrated her ordeal as a journalist before resorting to living in the murky street corridors.
During the interview, the journalist shared that she keeps a knife for protection against possible dangers while sleeping in her makeshift shelter.
“You have to sleep with a knife next to you here because someone might attack during the night,” Nasibo explained.
As she recounted her experience, Nasibo revealed that she had been diagnosed with depression during her time working as a health reporter at Nation Media Group.
Nasibo Kabale shared that there was a time she considered leaving her job and even contemplated suicide as her health began to decline. Eventually, she was admitted to Chiromo Hospital, where she underwent several treatments. However, she resigned herself to her fate after feeling that her condition wasn’t improving.
“At one point, the company laid off several employees, but I was fortunate to be among the five retained. However, the job became more difficult when I started witnessing people dying, which deeply troubled me,” she recounted.
Nasibo also revealed that her skills in journalism opened many doors for her, including positions at Nation Media Group and Standard Media Group. She emphasized that she never had difficulty securing employment.
“I never applied for a job, the employers just admired my effort and granted me chances at their companies. I left Nation Media because of depression but at Standard Group, I quit because of a meagre pay,” the journalist revealed.
She claimed that the devastating life she has to live makes her want to disconnect from reality from time to time. Her survival mainly depends on begging.
Every cloud has a silver lining, despite her current condition, Nasibo claimed she still could read and write and if given the opportunity once again, she would execute the duties to her level best.
