There have been cases of cyber insecurity where conmen discover loopholes or use scamming tricks to steal from mobile money users. A latest update has revealed how fraudsters operate and warned Kenyans to be extra careful.
Reports show that fraudsters are now targeting KCB mobile banking users with a well-planned scam. They start by downloading the KCB mobile banking app and attempt to register your account on their portal.
Since the portal is linked to your mobile number, you will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) as a text message.
The message contains a four-digit code and asks if you are the one trying to log in. This is where the fraudsters make their move.
Shortly after, they call you using a number that appears as “KCB” on your phone. They introduce themselves as KCB staff from the headquarters. They will then tell you your names, ID and phone number. The scammers will inform you that they are upgrading the KCB mobile banking abd you should share the OTP.
If you fall for the trick and share the OTP code, they complete the registration of your account on their device. This gives them full control, allowing them to withdraw all your money.
