The Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) has responded to accusations that youth have begun receiving monies for the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) through mobile money.

MSEA issued a statement on Monday, October 27, highlighting an ongoing fraudulent scam following complaints of adolescents receiving bogus texts asking them to wire money to unknown numbers.

“We have received reports of fraudulent mobile money messages claiming that youth have received funds from the NYOTA Project or NYOTA Foundation and prompting recipients to send money to unknown numbers,” according to a statement.

According to MSEA, no mobile money transfers have been made to programme beneficiaries, and the government does not oblige anyone to transmit money.

The MSEA concluded with the following: “Please note: NYOTA has not sent any mobile money-related payments.” The authority’s clarification came after a series of false mails.

Which have been circulating on social media, depicting mobile money transaction alerts stating that youth have received up to Ksh100,000 from ‘the NYOTA Foundation’.
