Chemutai Rhoda has sparked outrage online after sharing how a loan of KSh 300,000 turned into a financial nightmare that has left her frustrated, exhausted, and at risk of losing her car.

Her story, which she posted on Facebook, has drawn sympathy from many Kenyans who say they have faced similar struggles with high-interest loans and strict lenders.

According to Rhoda, she took the loan hoping it would help stabilise her personal finances and support her business.

However, the situation quickly got out of hand as interest and penalties accumulated, pushing the amount far beyond what she had initially borrowed. In a detailed breakdown shared online, she revealed that she has already repaid KSh 612,000, more than double the original loan, but her troubles are still not over.

Despite making the huge repayments, Rhoda claimed the lender is still holding onto her car’s logbook, which she had given as security when taking the loan.

She further disclosed that the vehicle has already been repossessed, leaving her unable to continue with her daily activities and business operations.

The situation has become even more worrying after she allegedly received threats that the car could soon be sold to recover the remaining balance.

Her post expressed deep frustration and helplessness, as she feels that the more she pays, the less progress she makes toward clearing the debt.

“It has become unbearable,” she wrote, adding that the pressure from the lender has left her emotionally drained and financially broken.

The story has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many users criticising what they described as predatory lending practices.

Some advised Kenyans to be cautious when taking logbook loans, while others called for stricter regulation of digital and private lenders to protect borrowers from excessive interest rates.

Financial experts often warn that logbook loans can become expensive if repayment terms are not clearly understood, as penalties and interest can grow rapidly when payments are delayed.
