Two fourth-year Geospatial Engineering students from the Technical University of Kenya have brought pride to their institution and the country after excelling at an international competition in Ghana. Arnold Omoja and Julia Hamala secured second place in the Digital Platforms category at the GAIAthon Innovation Challenge, a contest that brings together innovators and students from across Africa to showcase solutions that address pressing global issues.

The two students’ project impressed judges for its creativity, practicality, and potential to provide solutions in the field of digital platforms. Their innovation not only stood out for its technical depth but also for its ability to address real-world challenges that align with global sustainability and technology advancement goals.

For their achievement, Omoja and Hamala were awarded Ksh 193,244, equivalent to USD 1,500. The prize highlighted not only the recognition of their work but also the opportunity to scale and refine their idea further. Their success has been celebrated by their peers, lecturers, and the wider TUK community, who described the win as a testament to the university’s growing reputation for producing globally competitive innovators.

The GAIAthon Innovation Challenge is a highly regarded competition that provides a platform for young innovators to develop and showcase solutions in areas such as environmental sustainability, digital transformation, and community development. By taking part and excelling, the Kenyan students demonstrated the country’s strong potential in the global innovation space.
