A woman from western Kenya is picking up the pieces of her life after a relationship she invested in for nearly a decade collapsed, leaving her emotionally drained and financially strained.

Rebecca Khaemba, fondly known as Becky, had travelled to Saudi Arabia with hopes of building a better future for herself and her young son. What began as a journey of sacrifice and determination slowly turned into a painful lesson in trust and betrayal.

While working abroad as a househelp, Becky met a Kenyan man through a mutual friend. Their relationship grew quickly, and together they made plans for a future that included building a home. Trusting him completely, Becky began sending her earnings back home, contributing about KSh 1 million toward the construction of a house valued at several million shillings.

Over the years, the house took shape, and Becky believed she was securing a stable future. But cracks in the relationship soon began to show. According to her, her partner avoided conversations about having children together, often dismissing the idea despite their long-term commitment.

Things took a sharp turn when Becky returned to Kenya after years abroad. Already dealing with personal loss following her mother’s death and battling health complications, she expected support from the man she had built a life with. Instead, she was met with cold treatment and shocking news—he had moved on and started a family with another woman.

Efforts to recover her financial contribution have so far been unsuccessful, with the man reportedly refusing to acknowledge her stake in the property they built together.

Despite the heartbreak, Becky says she is determined to move forward. She now hopes her story will serve as a cautionary tale, urging others to prioritize their own security and remain alert to warning signs in relationships, no matter how promising they may seem.
