A routine media assignment in Nairobi’s Kangemi area turned into a terrifying brush with death for a local news crew, leaving behind shock, injuries, and haunting memories that may last a lifetime.
TUKO journalist and producer King’ori Wangechi has narrated how he, alongside his cameraman, narrowly escaped being struck by a speeding vehicle during a Piece To Camera (PTC) recording near Shell Kangemi, outside Mountain View Mall.
The crew had just completed a shoot on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, when they decided to redo a segment after realizing the journalist had missed mentioning his name in the first take. The location appeared calm and safe, with a designated road reserve area used as a temporary parking space.
However, what followed was anything but safe.
According to the journalist, the situation escalated within seconds as a speeding vehicle suddenly appeared and headed directly toward their filming position. His cameraman, Kelvin Starbizzy, was initially in the vehicle’s path before it swerved narrowly past him.
The vehicle then veered toward the journalist himself. In a split-second reaction, he ducked and attempted to signal the driver, managing to avoid impact by mere inches.
But behind them, tragedy struck.
As the vehicle continued, it hit a woman and her young child, sending them flying into the air. The shocking incident unfolded so quickly that the crew could barely process what had happened.
Emergency response followed immediately, with police officers arriving at the scene and taking control. The driver, described as an elderly man who did not appear intoxicated, was arrested as an ambulance was called from a nearby hospital.
The journalist later described the emotional aftermath, saying the team returned to the office shaken and silent, overwhelmed by gratitude for surviving what could have easily been fatal. However, the images of the injured woman and child remain deeply disturbing.
The cameraman also admitted that the scene continues to haunt him, especially whenever he passes the same location near Mountain View Mall.
What began as a simple newsroom task ended as a life-altering moment—one that has left the crew reflecting on how quickly ordinary work can turn into a life-and-death situation on Nairobi’s busy roads.
