Panic and confusion rocked Kangaru Boys High School in Embu County on Monday morning after students went on a midnight strike protesting the alleged assault of a Form Four student by a teacher.
According to witnesses, the unrest began shortly after midnight when furious students stormed out of their dormitories, chanting for justice and demanding the arrest of the teacher accused of beating their classmate. Within minutes, the situation turned chaotic as stones flew, windows shattered, and alarms blared across the compound.
The protesting students eventually marched into Embu town, drawing the attention of police officers and residents who were left stunned by the rare sight of uniformed teenagers demonstrating in the dead of night.
Embu West Sub-County Police Commander Vincent Kitili confirmed the incident, noting that the students themselves had reported the assault at Embu Police Station. “We acted swiftly and gathered them at Moi Stadium for safety before facilitating their return home,” Kitili said, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish what transpired.
By dawn, the once-calm school had turned into a scene of destruction — broken glass, scattered debris, and smoke stains bore witness to the long night of unrest. Teachers and security guards reportedly tried to contain the chaos but were overpowered by the angry students, some of whom scaled the fence to flee the school grounds.
Efforts to reach the school’s principal proved futile, as calls and messages went unanswered. Meanwhile, police patrols have been intensified around Embu town to prevent further incidents.
As investigations continue, tension remains high among parents and residents, with many demanding accountability and better handling of disciplinary issues in schools.
