Fresh political speculation has gripped the country after claims emerged that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka could be considering Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as his running mate in the 2027 presidential race.
The claims were amplified by digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, who suggested that recent political developments within the opposition could pave the way for a new alliance structure ahead of the next General Election. Although neither Kalonzo nor Sifuna has publicly confirmed such plans, the reports have sparked widespread discussion among supporters and political observers.
The debate comes at a time when opposition leaders are intensifying their campaigns across different regions of the country. Attention has particularly shifted to Western Kenya, where Kalonzo, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and other allied leaders have been engaging supporters under the Linda Mwananchi movement.
During the latest tour, the leaders were received by former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa before holding a series of meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation among opposition parties. The gatherings attracted significant public interest, with many viewing them as an early effort to build a formidable coalition capable of challenging President William Ruto in 2027.
Political analysts note that the choice of a running mate could be one of the most important decisions for any presidential candidate. Should Kalonzo eventually settle on Sifuna, the partnership would combine Kalonzo’s long experience in national leadership with Sifuna’s growing popularity among urban voters and sections of the younger generation.
The possibility of such a ticket has generated mixed reactions online. Some supporters believe it could energize the opposition and broaden its appeal across various regions, while others argue that discussions about running mates may be premature given that the election is still some distance away.
For now, the reports remain unverified political speculation. However, they have succeeded in igniting fresh debate about the likely shape of the opposition coalition and the leaders who could ultimately carry its hopes into the highly anticipated 2027 presidential contest.
