The former wife of late Kikuyu actor Joshua Kagema Muraya has spoken publicly for the first time since his death, sharing an emotional tribute during a mourning session in Nairobi.
Tabitha Wambui addressed mourners at Blue Springs Hotel along Thika Road on Sunday, August 10, where she opened up about her relationship with Kagema and their final conversation before his death.
Kagema died on August 3, 2026, following a short illness that saw him admitted to the ICU after experiencing persistent headaches and episodes of collapsing.
Wambui said Kagema’s final words to her only took on a deeper meaning after his death. She recalled that he had asked her to remain in contact with his brother, Karangu Muraya, because he felt his illness was becoming too difficult.
“In our last conversation with Kagema, he told me that he wanted me to be speaking to Karangu because, ‘I feel like this illness is getting the better of me,'” she said.
“He did not tell me that he was leaving me.”
Although the two had separated, Wambui said she still loved Kagema and had hoped they would eventually reunite and rebuild their family.
She described him as her babe and the father of her child, adding that he remained supportive of their son even after their separation. According to Wambui, Kagema would help with expenses, including school fees, whenever she reached out to him.
“I really loved him. Even after we separated, when I went out there, I was not thinking about moving on. I was always quietly
waiting for him to tell me, ‘Kawambu, come back so that we can build a home, a family,'” she said.
Wambui also praised Karangu for standing by her during the difficult period, saying his actions had proved wrong what she had previously heard about him.
“Karangu, Kagema’s brother, has proven me wrong as he has been the one supporting me despite all that I have been told about him,” she said.
She asked people to stop calling her with rumours and unsolicited opinions as she comes to terms with the loss.
“I pray that all the rumours and drama end now. Please stop calling me. Let me heal and let me now raise my son,” she said.
Kagema is expected to be buried in Kiriani as his family continues with the funeral arrangements.
