The Jubilee Party has dropped Mbeere North aspirant Jacob Ireri Mbao from its list of candidates, leaving his supporters heartbroken and confused.

Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni said the move was guided by an opposition pact that supports Democratic Party’s Newton Kariuki Ndwiga, also known as Newton Karish. He explained that the coalition between Jubilee, DP, and other Azimio parties aims to present one strong candidate against the ruling UDA in the November 5 by-election.

Mbao, a 45-year-old deaf philanthropist known for his charity work, had been unveiled as Jubilee’s flagbearer in September. He had vowed to restore the party’s lost glory and continue development projects left behind by the late MP. His campaign mainly focused on improving water access, empowering youth, and helping people with disabilities.

Even after some Jubilee officials hinted weeks ago that the party would not field a candidate, Mbao insisted he would be on the ballot under Jubilee. “Jubilee is my home. I will not be swayed by internal wrangles,” he said at the time.

Following the snub, close allies of Mbao say he may consider running as an independent or joining another party. He has not spoken publicly about his next step but has promised to consult his supporters first.

Newton Karish, a popular local musician and former MCA, has emerged as the favorite in recent opinion polls. Surveys show he leads with 40 percent, ahead of UDA’s Leonard Muthende at 32 percent. Analysts believe the by-election will test whether the new opposition unity deal can survive the growing pressure from UDA’s strong campaign machinery.

For the 120,000 voters in Mbeere North, the race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years, with alliances and loyalty put to the ultimate test.
