Ex-members of Sailors Gang Shalkido is fighting for his life after he was engaged in a hit-and-run accident that claimed his life. The artist, who was famous for his energetic live performances and humorous lyrics, is reported to be in critical condition as fans and artists have taken to social media to share messages of hope and prayers.
According to reports, the accident occurred late in the night, just hours after Shalkido uploaded a playful video of himself dancing to a popular Mugithi hit song. He was smiling and relaxed in the video, dancing and singing along — a scene that now feels achingly bittersweet to his fans.
Details of the accident are not yet known, but witnesses describe the vehicle that hit him as speeding away immediately, leaving him seriously hurt at the side of the road. He was taken to the nearest hospital by emergency responders, where he is undergoing treatment in intensive care.
Quick recovery, bro. Fight it; untimely death is not your portion,” tweeted one fan, speaking the minds of many Kenyans who became enamored with Shalkido during his days with the chart-busting Sailors Gang. The group, behind the hits Wamlambez and Pekejeng, was one of the frontrunners of Kenya’s Gengetone revolution, which redefined Kenyan urban music.
Friends and fellow artists, including the previous members of the group, have appealed to the fans to pray for Shalkido. “He is a fighter; he will survive,” a close friend told me.
Since the accident’s news has continued to spread, Kenyans on social media have shown up in large numbers with a hashtag #PrayForShalkido hoping that the young artist would survive and get back to what he did best — music and making people happy.
For now, the country holds its collective breath, optimistic following the rescue of Shalkido and justice for the senseless act that had him clinging to life.
