Veteran journalist Jeff Koinange and fellow broadcaster Immanuel Ndung’u gave Kenyans a lighthearted moment after their attempt at testing each other’s Kiswahili skills turned into a humorous exchange.
The two media personalities were filmed during a studio session at Hot 96 on Tuesday, September 22, where they challenged each other to name different colours in Kiswahili. What started as a simple language quiz soon became a series of uncertain answers and laughter.
Immanuel first asked Jeff for the Kiswahili word for brown. Jeff confidently responded with kahawa tungu, prompting Immanuel to laugh before suggesting kahawiwi as the answer.
However, Immanuel quickly admitted that he was also not completely certain about the word, telling Jeff that even he did not know for sure. The admission added to the humour as both broadcasters continued laughing over the exchange.
Jeff then turned the challenge on Immanuel by asking him for the Kiswahili word for blue. Unlike Jeff’s earlier response, Immanuel immediately gave samawati and went on to correctly identify green as kijani.
The pair, however, encountered another challenge when purple came up. Jeff attempted an answer but did not get it, while Immanuel also could not provide a correction.
The playful exchange later attracted reactions from social media users, with several Kenyans joking about the broadcasters’ struggles with Kiswahili. Some commenters teased them over the unusual answers, while others said the two made an entertaining combination.
The moment comes shortly after Immanuel also attracted attention for attempting to speak Kiswahili on air during an interview. During that incident, he joked about one day presenting the Kiswahili news alongside seasoned Kiswahili broadcaster Mashirima Kapombe.
The latest video added another humorous chapter to Immanuel and Jeff’s on air interactions, giving their audience a glimpse of the lighter side of the two broadcasters away from their usual news and broadcasting duties.
