Former Meru governor has emotionally opened up about the painful final moments he shared with his daughter Anita Kendi before her sudden death on May 14.
Speaking during an interview shared by Muuga FM, Kiraitu narrated how his daughter had returned home after attending an African women researchers’ conference where experts from countries including Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa were discussing public health financing.
According to Kiraitu, Anita appeared cheerful after the event and excited about the discussions taking place at the conference. However, later that evening, she complained of a headache, nausea and vomiting after taking tea.
Concerned about her condition, the former governor immediately instructed his driver to take her to for medical attention. Doctors attended to her, carried out tests and later discharged her after she reportedly felt better.
Kiraitu recalled that the two had a brief conversation when she returned home shortly before midnight. Anita then retired to bed, saying she needed to wake up early for the next day’s conference session at Windsor.
The family’s calm night would later turn tragic.
At around 4am, their house help rushed to alert them after noticing something was wrong in Anita’s room. Kiraitu said they found her struggling and immediately rushed her to for emergency treatment.
He revealed that doctors at the facility attempted to save her life moments after arrival, but unfortunately confirmed that she had passed away.
The heartbreaking account has touched many Kenyans online, with social media users expressing sympathy for the veteran politician and his family.
During Anita’s requiem mass attended by several leaders including Deputy President , an emotional image of Kiraitu quietly staring at his daughter’s portrait moved many mourners.
Leaders and Kenyans across the country, among them President , have continued sending messages of comfort and prayers to the grieving family.
