Nakuru is reeling after a chilling twist in the case of 23-year-old Ann Waithera, an M-Pesa agent whose disappearance on May 21, 2025, has now turned into a murder investigation—with her husband, Zacharia Wanjohi, emerging as the prime suspect.
Waithera vanished after leaving her kiosk at 1 p.m. to deposit Sh330,000 at Kenya Commercial Bank. Her decomposed body was found five days later at a plantation near Technology Farm, deepening the mystery and drawing national attention.
Initially appearing as a concerned husband, Wanjohi was the first to raise the alarm. He visited Nakuru Police Station just two hours after Waithera disappeared—an act investigators found unusually premature. Hours later, her employer reported her for alleged theft of the missing cash, raising further questions.
Detectives now say digital footprints placed both Waithera’s and Wanjohi’s phones in the same location around her disappearance. Additionally, a financial trail and suspicious behavior—including his early police report and possession of Sh49,350, which he claimed was unrelated—cast doubt on his account.
On June 3, Wanjohi appeared before the Nakuru Law Courts, where investigators requested 21 days to hold him as they await forensic results, analyze phone data, and retrieve CCTV footage. Authorities fear he may interfere with key witnesses.
While Wanjohi denies involvement and insists he only wants to bury his wife, the court was told that multiple critical witness statements are still pending, and another body found nearby raises fears of a broader crime scene.
As investigations continue, Nakuru residents are left grappling with a tragic tale of trust, betrayal, and a young life violently cut short.
