Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat takes home a hefty monthly salary of Ksh652,742. This figure was set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission in the latest 2021–2025 review. Lagat is the second-highest-ranking officer in the National Police Service, only behind the Inspector General.

But beyond his salary, Lagat enjoys a long list of benefits that have now sparked public debate. Kenyans are questioning whether top police officers deserve such massive rewards, especially after the suspicious death of influencer Albert Ojwang while in custody.

Lagat’s pay includes a basic salary, house allowance, and salary market adjustment. He also receives a fully maintained official car with an engine capacity not exceeding 3000cc.

His medical cover is even more impressive. It includes up to Ksh10 million for inpatient treatment, Ksh300,000 for outpatient, and other large limits for maternity, dental, and optical services. The cover is extended to his spouse and up to four children under 25 years old.

On top of that, Lagat qualifies for a Ksh6 million car loan and a mortgage of up to Ksh30 million under friendly terms. These incentives are part of a system meant to keep top officers loyal, motivated, and secure.

The DIG also wears a unique ceremonial uniform marked with silver oak leaves, lion emblems, and laurel wreaths, a symbol of his elite status. The perks come as protesters demand justice for Ojwang and call for Lagat’s resignation.

At a time when some police recruits earn as low as Ksh18,760, Kenyans are asking tough questions about fairness in the system. The massive pay gap between junior officers and top brass like Lagat is now under public scrutiny.

As tension grows and protests continue, Lagat’s wealth and influence are now at the center of a national conversation.
