Okwara

Veteran Kenyan journalist Yvonne Okwara has dismissed reports suggesting she will relocate to London following her appointment to a senior position at Shuga Global.

Okwara clarified that she will continue living and working in Nairobi despite joining the international organisation, whose headquarters were previously based in the United Kingdom.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the former Citizen TV news anchor dismissed the speculation, saying there was no plan for her to move abroad.

“I am not moving to London, though. You should stop reading the blogs,” she said.

She further explained that Shuga Global had relocated its global headquarters to Nairobi, confirming that she would be based in Kenya.

Her clarification comes days after she officially left Citizen TV on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, bringing her eight-and-a-half-year stint at the Royal Media Services-owned station to an end.

During her time at Citizen TV, Okwara established herself as one of Kenya’s prominent journalists, presenting major news bulletins and business programmes. She also featured prominently on the News Gang political discussion segment and conducted several high-profile interviews.

Her departure attracted widespread attention, with viewers and colleagues reflecting on her contribution to the newsroom.

A day after her exit, on Wednesday, October 28, Shuga Global announced her appointment as Head of Investments and Partnerships.

In her new position, Okwara will oversee strategic partnerships, identify investment opportunities and mobilise resources to support the organisation’s youth-focused programmes.

She will also help develop sustainable funding models as Shuga Global seeks to reduce its reliance on traditional grants.

Formerly known as the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, the organisation is behind the popular Shuga drama series, which uses storytelling and youth engagement to address issues such as HIV prevention and sexual health.

Okwara’s appointment marks a new chapter in her career, shifting from mainstream broadcast journalism to leadership, investment and social impact.
