Being a young man from Nairobi he moved to South Africa in search of greener pastures. However, the harsh reality of poverty and the desperate need to improve his life led him to adopt the unusual path of embracing his gay identity. The difficulty of this adjustment initially caused him anguish but he persevered for a year relying on a white man for financial support in exchange for his companionship.
Collins’ determination to improve his circumstances extended beyond South Africa prompting him to travel to Saudi Arabia. The lure of financial gain motivated him to continue practicing his gay lifestyle in this foreign country. Desperate to fight poverty and support his family in Kenya, Collins found men willing to pay him varying amounts, ranging from KSh 2,000 to KSh 4,000 per client. Some even preferred to show their appreciation through gifts rather than monetary compensation.
Though Collins’ choices were driven by necessity and the desire to escape poverty, he acknowledges the mistreatment he occasionally faced in the Gulf as a result of his lifestyle. While not as extreme as the hardships endured by women employed in the region, Collins acknowledges the challenges and risks he encountered as a gay man.
John Green Collins’s life journey is a tale of survival and adaptation in a foreign land, driven by poverty and the pursuit of a better life. While compelled to make challenging decisions, he resorted to a gay lifestyle to meet his basic needs and support his loved ones back home.
