Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has apologized for a tweet that mistakenly named the wrong Inspector General of Police while commenting on the death of blogger Albert Ojwang. The 31 year old influencer died in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on June 8, 2025, under unclear circumstances.
In her initial post yesterday Passaris praised the Inspector General for suspending the OCS and officers on duty during Ojwang’s detention. However, she mistakenly referred to former IG Japhet Koome instead of the current IG, Douglas Kanja.
The error drew sharp criticism from social media users, who questioned how she could confuse such a high-ranking official’s name.
Passaris clarified the mistake, attributing it to her young social media team and the slow return to work after holiday. She explained that while she was on a work tour, her team mixed up the details during edits.
She added a light-hearted note, saying that at 60, she sometimes forgets even her sisters’ names, so she understands how her younger employees could make such an error. She also referenced a Swahili phrase, humorously implying that mistakes happen to everyone.
Death of Ojwang has sparked a lot of reaction across the country with various stakeholders demanding quick answers on how he died when in custody under unclear circumstances.
