Heavy Rains

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a 24-hour heavy rainfall and thunderstorm alert affecting Nairobi, Central Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley on Tuesday, May 6.

According to the department, the weather system is expected to bring intense downpours, strong winds, and possible localized flooding in low-lying and urban areas. Residents in the affected regions have been advised to remain alert, avoid crossing flooded roads, and secure loose outdoor items that could be displaced by wind.

Authorities also warned that thunderstorms may be accompanied by lightning strikes, raising safety concerns for outdoor activities, especially in open fields and construction sites.

Urban centers such as Nairobi are expected to experience traffic disruptions during peak hours, as waterlogging and reduced visibility may slow down movement across major roads.

Kenya Meteorological Department shared the advisory through its official Facebook page, urging the public to stay updated with frequent weather updates and follow guidance from disaster management agencies.

Commuters and school administrators have been encouraged to plan ahead to minimize disruptions, while emergency response teams remain on standby in case of flooding or storm-related incidents. The public is also urged to monitor local radio stations and official updates for any changes in the weather forecast over the next 24 hours.

Residents in the Rift Valley and Central regions are particularly advised to remain cautious due to the likelihood of flash floods in riverine areas and slippery road conditions. Authorities say preparedness remains key as the country continues to experience intermittent rainfall patterns typical of the long rains season. Motorists are urged to drive carefully and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours.

Officials reiterated this message on Facebook, emphasizing public safety and urging vigilance across all affected counties.

Weather updates will continue to be issued as conditions evolve throughout the day. Stay alert always.
