Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has lit up the political space with a bold statement targeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. In a trending Facebook post, Wambugu suggested that Gachagua stayed silent during the June 25 protests because he was quietly hoping they would turn chaotic.

Wambugu claims that Gachagua expected the protests to explode into uncontrollable violence so he could twist the narrative and accuse the youth of being destructive. According to him, the plan was to use that chaos to advance fear-driven and tribal messaging—something Gachagua has often been criticized for.

However, things didn’t go as he may have hoped. Despite moments of tension, most of the protests remained calm, focused, and youth-led. Gen Z demonstrated unity and discipline while calling out poor leadership, high taxes, and lack of accountability—without descending into mass violence.

That calm approach, Wambugu argues, completely disarmed leaders banking on chaos. And in his words, Gachagua has now lost political direction, as the strategy he counted on has backfired. He adds that the silence from the former DP during this moment of national awakening has left many puzzled.

The post sparked a storm online, with young people and political watchers weighing in. Many are now questioning why Gachagua didn’t stand with youth when they needed leaders to hear them. Others say it’s proof that old-school politics is crumbling, and the youth are no longer buying into fear-based narratives.

Wambugu believes Kenya has entered a new season where leaders must prove themselves through action—not scare tactics or tribal noise. Gen Z, he says, has proven that they care more about solutions than slogans.

As 2027 edges closer, the ground is shifting. Leaders who can’t adapt may find themselves left behind.
