Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced a change in the transportation plan for the late Raila Odinga’s body. Instead of using the road, the body will now be flown from Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium to Bondo in Siaya County.
The adjustment was made after consultations between the national organizing committee and the Odinga family. It is aimed at managing time and ensuring a smooth transition to the next phase of the funeral programme. The airlift option was also seen as a safer and more efficient way to handle the large crowds expected along the road route.
Thousands of mourners have continued to gather at the stadium for the public viewing. The government has therefore extended the viewing time beyond the earlier announced 3 p.m. deadline to allow more people to pay their last respects. Security agencies and medical teams remain on site to maintain order and attend to the needs of the crowd.
The atmosphere at the stadium has been calm but emotional, with people arriving from different parts of the country. Many have spent hours in long queues, waiting for their turn to view the body of the former Prime Minister, whose political journey has shaped Kenya’s history for decades.
In Bondo, preparations are in top gear ahead of the arrival. Roads have been cleared, security tightened, and local leaders are coordinating with national officials to ensure that the burial events proceed smoothly. The funeral committee has outlined a series of events that will take place in Bondo, where Raila will be laid to rest.
