Content creator GK Nyambura has opened up on the growing reality of students raising children while still in university, sparking fresh public debate on campus life responsibilities and social pressures affecting young learners.

Her remarks came after online discussions were triggered by a viral case involving a student who organised a baby shower inside a university hostel, raising concerns among students and members of the public about the changing lifestyle of some campus learners and the challenges they face in balancing education and parenthood.

Nyambura noted that many young people in universities are increasingly becoming parents due to various social and economic factors, including joblessness, financial dependency and lack of proper guidance.

She highlighted that while higher education is meant to shape careers, some students find themselves dealing with adult responsibilities earlier than expected, forcing them to adjust their academic and personal lives at the same time.

She further pointed out that the situation reflects wider societal challenges, especially unemployment among young people, which continues to influence decisions about relationships and family formation at a young age.

According to her perspective, the pressure to survive financially often leads students into situations that later become difficult to manage while still pursuing their studies.

The discussion also touched on the issue of university environment and discipline with concerns being raised about hostel conduct and the extent to which institutions should regulate student lifestyles.

The baby shower incident became a symbol of how campus culture is evolving with some students openly embracing family life while still in school.

Nyambura’s comments have since ignited mixed reactions online with some supporting her views on the need for responsibility and preparedness while others argue that young parents in universities should be supported rather than judged as they navigate both education and childcare under difficult conditions.

The conversation continues to highlight the intersection between education, economic hardship and changing social norms among Kenya’s youth population, especially within university settings.
