President William Ruto’s son, George Ruto, is already facing unexpected setbacks after his much-hyped luxury matatu, Mood, was taken back to the garage just days after a dramatic launch at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
The matatu, which cost over Ksh14 million, had promised to revolutionize Kenya’s public transport scene. With high-end features like solar panels, a 65-inch TV, imported bucket seats, a live DJ booth, and stunning lighting, it was branded as the new king of Nairobi’s matatu culture.
But things quickly turned messy.
During its flashy debut at KICC, thousands of fans, influencers, and matatu lovers showed up to catch a glimpse of Mood. The hype turned into chaos. The crowd got too excited, leading to damages on the matatu’s sleek body and even the solar panels on its roof — a key part of its design.
Shortly after, a video surfaced online showing Mood already back in the garage for repairs. According to the matatu’s team, the chaos during the event overwhelmed the setup, with several matatus also needing touch-ups after the event.
The event itself was wild. A full-on street party unfolded, paralyzing traffic in Nairobi CBD as Mood cruised around with a convoy of fans cheering and chanting. While the launch created buzz, it also exposed flaws in planning, especially when it comes to security and crowd control.
