The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has warned against what he described as reckless and dangerous decisions by the government to defund Kenya’s education sector, calling for urgent reforms to safeguard the country’s future.
This followed an engagement with Kenyan professionals living and working in the United States, held in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was accompanied by his spouse, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
In a statement on Saturday, July 26, 2025, Gachagua said education remains a critical pillar in national development and must be protected at all costs.
“They are as concerned as we are about the draconian decisions being made towards defunding Kenya’s education sector, as well as the motionless university funding model by the current regime,” he stated.
He lamented what he termed “recklessness and ineptness” in the current management of the education docket, warning that if left unchecked, the consequences would be catastrophic for future generations.
“Education is one of the most essential foundations that every nation must take seriously. Unfortunately, in our nation, recklessness and ineptness are driving this sector into a bottomless pit. This, left unchecked, will destroy generations to come,” he stated.
Gachagua urged citizens, both at home and abroad, to remain vigilant and to speak out against policies that threaten the country’s social and intellectual fabric.
“Nobody should be left free to decide to shake the very foundation of our nation and the legacy we live on. What then shall be left of our country if this is allowed?” he posed.
He also took the opportunity to thank the diaspora teachers for their solidarity and for flying the Kenyan flag high through their work in the U.S.
“Thank you, teachers, for your solidarity and being good ambassadors of our nation, Kenya,” he said.
The meeting in Baltimore is part of Gachagua’s broader effort to engage Kenyans in the diaspora on key national issues and to rally collective support in advocating for reforms in the country.
