Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken for the first time since his dramatic return to Kenya after cutting short his trip to the United States.
Gachagua, who landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday, August 21, addressed his supporters and thanked them for the warm reception.
In his message, he expressed gratitude to Kenyans for standing with him during his time away.
“Thank you, my great people of Kenya, for the love. I am happy to be back home,” he said.
The former second-in-command had travelled to the US earlier this month, but his visit was unexpectedly shortened. While details about the reasons for his abrupt return remain unclear, sources close to his team suggested that political developments back home influenced his decision to come back earlier than planned.
His arrival was marked by a colorful motorcade along Mombasa Road as supporters lined up to cheer him.
Crowds chanted his name and waved placards, while others sang songs praising his leadership. For many of his backers, Gachagua’s return signaled a renewed energy in his political journey.
Political analysts, however, noted that his comeback comes at a time when tensions are rising within the country’s political landscape. His presence is expected to shape ongoing debates, especially as the nation gears up for heated political realignments.
Gachagua’s short message was seen as a deliberate attempt to keep the focus on his supporters rather than diving into controversies immediately.
Observers say the former deputy president may be calculating his next moves carefully as he seeks to re-establish himself in the political scene after weeks away.NTV Kenya: We want to strengthen the opposition – Rigathi Gachagua
Meanwhile, some of his allies hinted that he could soon hold a public rally to outline his next steps and respond to issues that arose during his absence.
