The death of Raila Odinga has unsettled the political class in ways Kenya has not seen in years. Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has now added his voice to the growing list of leaders reacting to the moment.

Tying his message of respect to a bold prediction about what could unfold between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Wambugu noted that Raila’s absence creates a vacuum that neither political rivalry nor party loyalty can immediately fill.

He said Raila was the one constant who forced political players, friends and foes alike, to confront national questions above personal ambition. Without him, he believes the tone and structure of political engagement will change.

According to Wambugu, the grief surrounding Raila’s death is more than emotional, it is strategic. He predicts that Ruto and Uhuru may be pushed, directly or indirectly, into a moment of recalibration.

The death of the one man who shaped coalitions, mediated crises, and anchored national dissent could prompt new realignments.

Wambugu also noted that Raila treated both leaders differently but fairly, and that public perceptions of how they handled him in his final years may influence how communities respond going forward. Respect, he suggested, will be remembered longer than rivalry.

Across the country, similar sentiments are emerging. From former advisors to long-time critics, even those who often clashed with Raila now speak of him as a pillar in Kenya’s political architecture.

His passing has briefly silenced partisan noise and reminded the nation that politics, at its core, is shaped by personalities larger than the offices they seek.

As Kenya enters this uncertain chapter, Wambugu believes Raila’s influence will not fade, it will instead become the lens through which new alliances and tensions are judged.
