David Owuor, a 40-year-old man from Homa Bay County, has shared a raw and powerful story of how alcoholism nearly destroyed his life – costing him a high-paying job, a relationship, and years of stability. In an emotional interview with TUKO.co.ke, Owuor revealed that his addiction spanned 16 long years, starting innocently at age 18 when family members and friends introduced him to drinking during primary school days.

At his peak, Owuor worked as an accountant at British-American Insurance Company (BRITAM), earning over KSh 100,000 monthly, plus income as a financial consultant. Life seemed promising. But alcohol took over. He reached a point where he couldn’t function without it, leading to his dismissal from the job. The loss didn’t hit immediately – denial kept him going, but it devastated him during recovery.

The habit also ended a promising relationship with a foreign partner (described in some shares as a “mzungu lover”), leaving him isolated and broken. Owuor’s turning point came after hitting absolute rock bottom.

His recovery journey lasted at least four years, a grueling process of self-reflection, support, and determination. Today, he’s fully sober, married for seven years, and a proud father of three children. “I have a happy family now,” he shared, crediting faith and perseverance for his turnaround.

Not content to keep his victory private, Owuor founded Tumaini Action, a community-based organization in Homa Bay. He uses it to mentor and motivate young people, warning them about alcohol’s dangers before it’s too late. “Alcohol will always eliminate all your sources of strength,” he warns, hoping his story prevents others from the same pain.

During this festive season, when drinking often spikes at gatherings, Owuor’s message hits harder. Many Kenyans face similar silent struggles, and stories like his offer hope: Recovery is possible, and second chances can lead to fuller lives.

His journey from despair to purpose shows incredible resilience. For anyone battling addiction, reach out help exists, and brighter days await.
