Fresh details have emerged about a Kenyan woman, Winnie Mukosi, who reportedly ended her marriage barely one month after a glamorous wedding ceremony that had been attended by family members and close friends filled with excitement and hope for the couple’s future.
Winnie has now spoken publicly about the challenges she allegedly faced shortly after tying the knot on December 5, 2015, during a colourful ceremony that many believed marked the beginning of a happy and lasting union. According to her, the joy and celebration surrounding the wedding quickly faded as problems reportedly began almost immediately after the marriage.
Speaking in an interview with [TUKO], Winnie claimed that her husband started showing controlling behaviour just a day after their wedding. She alleged that on December 6, 2015, she was informed that she was now expected to fully submit to her husband as the head of the home and obey his instructions without questioning them.
One of the demands that shocked her most, she said, was being instructed to abandon her plans of pursuing a career and instead remain at home. Winnie explained that she had completed her studies the previous year and was looking forward to starting work and becoming financially independent.
According to her, the situation became difficult because she also had family responsibilities, including supporting her mother whenever necessary. She questioned how she would manage to help her family without having a source of income of her own.
Winnie further alleged that the marriage became emotionally draining as additional restrictions were imposed on her, including limiting communication with some of her friends. She said the relationship gradually became isolating and emotionally overwhelming.
She noted that abuse is not always physical, explaining that emotional and financial control can also have serious effects on a person’s wellbeing and freedom.
