A family in Nakuru County is mourning the loss of a beloved mother and wife who died in a tragic road accident while travelling to check on her daughter following the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy.
Faith Koskei lost her life on May 8 after the vehicle she was travelling in crashed in Gilgil. She was accompanied by her husband, niece, and sister as they rushed to the school amid concerns about their daughter’s safety after the dormitory fire that shocked the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Robinson Kibet expressed deep sorrow over Faith’s death, noting that her husband now faces the painful reality of returning home without his wife. The widower sustained serious injuries in the accident, including fractures to his shoulder and hip.
Faith’s father-in-law, Henry Koskei, described her as a pillar of strength within the family and someone whose advice he greatly valued.
“She was a strong and good woman. I could not make important decisions without consulting her,” he said.
The family also provided an update on the husband’s condition, revealing that he remains hospitalised and recently underwent surgery.
According to Henry, doctors successfully completed one operation, but another procedure on his hip joint is still required.
As medical bills continue to rise, the family has appealed to the government for financial assistance to help cover treatment costs and burial expenses.
Relatives further called for a thorough investigation into the school fire, arguing that Faith’s death was indirectly linked to the tragedy that prompted her journey.
Meanwhile, Faith’s daughter has spoken publicly for the first time since losing her mother. Although she suffered minor injuries during the panic that followed the fire, she said she has chosen to forgive those believed to have caused the blaze.
The student explained that her late mother always encouraged her to avoid hatred and resentment, lessons she now holds close as the family struggles to cope with the devastating loss.
