James Khatwenge, a former NIS officer who served under the Moi regime—a regime often associated with political assassinations and mysterious murders—has weighed in on the tragic killing of Kasipul Kabondo MP Charles Were.
According to Khatwenge, the MP could have taken critical steps to protect himself once he began receiving life-threatening messages.
Khatwenge believes that upon realizing his life was in danger, Were should have moved swiftly to report the matter to the Parliamentary Security Committee.
This would have enabled him to request additional security detail, potentially saving his life.
“The moment he knew he was a marked man, he should have treated the threats with the seriousness they deserved,” said Khatwenge.
Prior to his death, Were was fully aware that someone was after him.
Several videos have since emerged of the MP openly stating how exposed he felt and how certain political rivals wanted him eliminated.
Even his last-minute changes to his logistics indicated a heightened sense of danger and awareness that someone was determined to end his life.
