The political family in Kenya is mourning the death of Hon. Abdikadir Hassan Yussuf, widely known as Tallie, a former Member of Parliament for Garissa North Constituency.

He passed away today while traveling from Australia back to Kenya. His family and close associates confirmed the news. Leaders from Garissa were among the first to make it public, leading to a flood of tributes from across the North Eastern region.

Tallie, whose name also appears in some records as Abdi Yusuf Hassan due to Somali naming variations, was a pioneer in politics. Born in the mid-20th century in the Somali-dominated North Eastern Province, now Garissa County, he rose into leadership in the early years of independent Kenya.

He represented Garissa North Constituency from 1969 to 1983 under the ruling KANU party. For three straight terms, he worked to raise the voice of Somali communities who felt neglected.

During his tenure, Tallie pushed for infrastructure development in an area long forgotten. He fought for access to clean water and better security in a region troubled by cross-border conflict and bandit attacks.

His time in office fell within the tense period after the Shifta War, when the government was trying to integrate Somali-Kenyans into national politics.

As one of the earliest Somali leaders in Parliament, Tallie made history by bringing attention to the needs of his community. He was among the few voices calling for fair sharing of resources in the semi-arid North Eastern region. Many remember him for championing devolution decades before the 2010 Constitution made it law.

When he left politics in 1983, he continued to serve his people in other ways. He was active in community councils, working as a mediator in disputes and supporting education projects. Though Garissa North was later split into areas such as Lagdera and Dadaab, Tallie remained a symbol of strong leadership.

The exact cause of his death has not been shared. Reports say he was on his way back from Australia either for medical reasons or to reunite with family. Fafi MP Abdikarim Osman led tributes saying, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of former MP Hon. Abdikadir Hassan Yussuf alias Tallie. May Allah forgive him and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un.”

Leaders and citizens alike have praised him as a pillar of the community and a mentor to young politicians. Funeral plans are ongoing, with burial expected in Garissa under Islamic rites. Tallie leaves behind a lasting legacy and a family that continues to honor his memory.
