Firebrand comedian and political activist Eric Omondi has been released on a Ksh100,000 bond by a Nairobi court following a dramatic weekend in police custody that began with his high-profile arrest at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Omondi was formally arraigned on Monday, June 8, facing charges of unlawfully obstructing motorists and interfering with public infrastructure, contrary to Section 53(1)(c) of the Kenya Roads Act.

The “120 Jerricans” Charge Sheet

According to the prosecution’s case, the traffic obstruction charges stem from a public demonstration conducted in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) mid-last month.

The state alleges that on May 18, 2026, Omondi unlawfully disrupted the free flow of traffic along the busy Kimathi Street. The court heard that the comedian oversaw the offloading of 120 empty 10-liter plastic jerricans from an Isuzu commercial lorry (registration number KAR 508Y), causing a temporary gridlock along the main city avenue.

Legal Team Decries “Kamata Kamata Friday” Witch-Hunt

Omondi’s high-profile defense team, led by Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, vehemently pushed back against the state’s narrative, terming the prosecution a politically motivated stunt lacking any substantive legal backing.

“The charges against Eric Omondi are frivolous, fickle, limping, and vexatious,” Owino stated outside the law courts. “What we’ve focused on today really is what I termed as an odoriferous saga that is meant to reinvent the Kamata Kamata Fridays.”

The defense team raised serious constitutional concerns over the heavy-handed nature of the arrest and subsequent detention:

  • Phone Confiscation: Lawyers revealed that police confiscated Omondi’s mobile phones upon arrest. “What is baffling is that in investigations of that charge, they have confiscated his phones and we are wondering whether he placed his phones on the road to obstruct vehicles,” Owino questioned.
  • Airport Extraction: Co-counsel drew parallels between Omondi’s airport arrest and the infamous 2018 state deportation of lawyer-activist Miguna Miguna, arguing that dragging the entertainer off a landed aircraft flagrantly violated Article 49 of the Constitution and Section 28 of the Kenya Airports Authority Act.
  • Bail Denial: Defense attorneys faulted the oversight at the Lang’ata Police Station, where desk officers allegedly refused to grant the activist cash bail over the weekend, forcing him to spend three nights behind bars before his Monday morning arraignment.

Activism vs. Prosecution

The defense further argued that Omondi should be celebrated as a national hero rather than being subjected to state-sponsored litigation. Through his Sisi Kwa Sisi humanitarian campaign, the comedian has mobilized millions of shillings to settle medical bills, pay school fees, and provide financial relief to struggling families across the country.

The court has scheduled the matter for a mention on June 22, 2026, where Omondi’s legal team intends to mount a vigorous defense to have the traffic obstruction case dismissed entirely.
