A Dutch national in Diani has issued a public apology following a widely circulated video showing him spitting at and verbally confronting a Kenyan police officer. The man, Elwin Ter Horst, explained that his behavior was influenced by mental health challenges.
In a recent statement, Horst revealed that he had been suffering from psychosis, coupled with extreme dehydration and hunger over several days. He asked Kenyans for forgiveness and expressed his desire to remain in the country, contribute to local business, and support communities.
“I was not well mentally and lacked food and water for days. I sincerely apologize to the people of Kenya. I want to live here, invest here, and help the community,” he said.
According to Msambweni OCPD Robinson Langat, Horst was apprehended at Boma Banda Cottage in Diani after residents reported that he had caused a disturbance, physically assaulted his girlfriend, and damaged property.
He now faces multiple charges, including assault, property damage, drug trafficking, and unlawful presence in Kenya.
Langat emphasized that all residents and visitors are bound by Kenyan law, warning that violations could result in both prosecution and deportation.
The incident has sparked intense online debate, with some Kenyans demanding strict action while others urged compassion for Horst’s mental health situation.
