A disturbing scene in Kendu Bay, Homa Bay County, has drawn sharp reactions across the country. A video circulating widely on social media shows a police officer in full uniform staggering along a busy road in broad daylight.
In the footage, the officer appears unable to keep his balance and seems to be talking to himself as he walks.
At one moment, he stops, turns around, and mutters words that cannot be clearly heard before continuing on his way. His actions gave the impression that he was under the influence of alcohol or suffering from some form of distress.
Although the identity of the officer has not yet been confirmed, the video sparked strong reactions from Kenyans. Most netizens expressed concern rather than anger, saying the officer needed help and support.
Others questioned how a uniformed officer could be allowed to patrol while appearing unfit for duty. Many called on the National Police Service to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
The incident has also reopened an old debate about alcohol abuse, mental health, and stress among police officers. In the past, similar cases have raised questions about the pressure officers face in their daily work and whether enough support systems are in place to help them cope.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has previously spoken about challenges such as alcoholism, insecurity, and community conflicts, especially in regions like Migori and parts of Nyanza. He has warned that such issues slow down development and affect public trust in security agencies.
Murkomen has also made it clear that officers who break professional rules will face firm disciplinary action.
